What Is Mass  Communication?

 

The use of media outlets in order to deliver messages and ideas to one's target audience.

​

- Media outlets are things like print, audio, or visuals; the way one chooses to communicate their message and ideas to the world or a target audience.

​

- People use mass communication to inform, entertain, educate, or persuade an audience.

​

- This communication is perfect for delivering ideas and messages to a large audience or a specific audience.

​

- There is usually little to no reaction between the sender and the audience. It depends on how much one wants to see people who view their content in person.

​

- Four examples of mass communication are newspapers, movies, anime and books, and more.

​

- Mass communication is usually toward a large audience, but can be on a smaller range such as getting on the phone with someone, or playing the game with someone.

Why should one even care about mass communication?

​

- One has a good idea of what media they take in and how it affects their thoughts and feelings.

​

- One is aware of what media can lead to negative actions and steers clear from media that trigger thoughts and feelings behind those actions.

 

- Having good awareness of mass communication skills allows one's social image, career, and social life to be expressed in a way that satisfies oneself.

- This will attract people that like the way you express yourself.

- One is aware that some content is neutral, or light-hearted. Not everything is deep, some people just want to laugh.

 

- If one is aiming for a good reputation with their media image, career, business, or hobby that correlates with mass communication, It is vital to be wary of the thoughts and emotions your content evokes.

- Effective mass communication skills give one a higher chance of attracting people or reaching a specific audience.

- One is able to evoke thoughts and feelings in the audience that lead to a positive action or understanding of themself.

The 4 types of mass communication

 

Entertainment:

- A form of communication where the sender delivers ideas and messages in an amusing way to the audience. 

- The audience expects to enjoy the content of the sender.

- This allows the sender to leave the impact they want to leave without boring the audience.

- This form of mass communication is focused on holding the attention of the audience.

Informational:

- A form of communication that focuses on helping the audience clearly learn and understand a topic, issue, or technique more in-depth.

- The audience expects to learn more in-depth about a specific topic their interested in.

- This form of mass communication is focused on informing the audience with accurate information that can give the information they're looking for.

​

Educational:

- A form of communication that focuses on exchanging facts, ideas, and/or opinions with the intention of making sure the audience extracts the same understanding the sender has. 

- The audience expects to learn something valuable to them, or maybe something light-hearted but either way they expect to learn it and execute it themselves.

​

Persuasive:

- This form of communication focuses on influencing the audience's beliefs, attitudes, intentions, motivations, or behaviors.

- The message is intended to shape, reinforce, or change the response of another or others.

- The audience expects to either stand strong on what they believe or hear the ideas and messages with an open mind.

- If one has an open mind, they can possibly learn something new and may even like it enough to add it to their life.

- If one has a closed mind on messages that are different from their own, they are usually more traditional. of things they already believe

- They know what kind of feelings and thoughts they want to evoke in the audience.

- One knows what they like to do for fun, leading to a higher probability of attracting like-minded individuals.

- One has an idea of what they value, making it easier to attract people with like-minded values. This leads to a more loyal audience because they love the way you present common content in your unique way. 

 

- One is being true to themself; one presents their thoughts and/or feelings in an honest way that reflects what one truly thinks or feels. Even with fictional content; one is not holding back on the ideas and words they express.

Print:

- A process for mass production that involves reproducing text and images through the product of paper.

- The type of outlets that fall into print are newspapers, magazines, books, articles, flyers, posters, billboards, direct mail, text messages, and more!

Audio:

- The use of devices that verbally record one's voice in order to be played later to the target audience of one's ideas and thoughts.

- The type of outlets that fall into audio are radio, music, podcast, speaker, headphones, and more.

Visual:

- The use of devices that visually and verbally record one's ideas and messages.

- The types of outlets that fall into visual photos, videos, documentaries, movies, tv shows, skits, music videos, news, facetime, and more! 

What are some tips to get better as mass communication?

 

- Practicing awareness of the why? behind why you want to deliver your messages. and ideas in the first place.

​

- Whenever you put out in mass communication usually has a factor of longevity too, so be wary of what you put out and the type of feeling people get from it.

​

- Pay attention to the way your body responds to the content your realizing, do you feel good about the effect your content is leaving on others?

​

- Being aware of what thoughts you have will make it easier to pinpoint why you do certain actions in the first place.

​

- Do not worry about trying to target your audience, just post the content that you have fun doing.  People who like something about you will naturally attract to you!

​

- Be empathetic to your audience, listen and pay attention to the thoughts and feelings they gain from your content.

​

- Being yourself will land connections with like-minded individuals, which leads to higher satisfaction in the people you meet.

 

- Aim to connect with people who complement you positively and beneficially. 

What are signs of a person with good mass communication skills?

 

- You are aware of the effects your content leaves on people!

- You're aware of the type of thoughts and feelings your content evokes in an audience.

​

- You're aware of how other people's content affects you!

​

- You can tell the difference between downplaying opinions and constructive criticism.

​

- One feels happy with the type of content they put out because they are happy with the results it brings on themself and the people viewing!

- One is able to interpret one's analytical stats and pay attention to what the audience likes.

- One envisions themself leaving a positive and beneficial impact on people through the content they post; aware that an impact can be so deep it can influence very powerful actions.

Photos:

- Capture the moment and express a thousand words through a picture.

- This is like reading the cover of a book. One is able to tell a story through a moment.

- Pictures can be kept in many forms, and are always a great way to spark memories that trigger positive emotions and thoughts.

- The audience that can understand will be the ones to stick around because it's deeper than just your content.

Videos:

- This allows the audience to gain a visual and verbal first-person view of what you recorded.

- People are able to get a deeper look at who you are!

- Videos are one of the most effective ways to gain recognition and engagement!

- This is a good way to promote, entertain, and inform all in one!

Films:

- A whole lifetime can be told in a movie.

- This is for people who want to deliver content in an attention-grabbing way!

- Movies told in an entertaining way have the audience locked in on the screen.

- You receive a higher attention span from the audience.

- Documentaries can even be entertaining in an educational/informational way.

- We tend to watch documentaries that evoke thoughts and feelings we like/love feeling.
